DIY Maintenance - Electric Mobility Scooter
If you or someone that you love needs an electric mobility scooter to help you get around safely and you have invested the money into purchasing one, then you will want to make sure that you are performing regular maintenance on your scooter to keep it running properly at all times. While this may seem like a daunting task, it actually takes very little time to do.
One of the most basic things that you can do to maintain your scooter is to inspect the tires regularly. You will want to make sure the tread has not worn down to less than 1/32 of an inch; if it has, then the tires will need to be replaced. While you are inspecting your tires, you will want to double check the air pressure of any inflatable tires. You want the air pressure to be between 30-35 PSI to get the maximum usage out of the tires. Many scooters are equipped with flat free tires and don't need air, so check your owner's manual to make sure you know which type you have.
Along with maintaining the tires on your scooter, you will want to
make sure that you regularly check the battery terminals. If there is
any corrosion, you will want to get it cleaned up as soon as possible.
Doing this will ensure that you are getting the maximum battery life
out of your battery. Treat corroded terminals with a mixture of baking
soda and water, and dry them
prior to reconnecting the battery.
Now that the tires and battery are fully functional, you will want to check all wires regularly as well. If there are any frayed or loose wires, you will want to get the scooter to a technician to have them repaired or replaced as quickly as possible. Failure to do this can lead to electrical shock or possibly a fire.
If you are not planning to use your electric mobility scooter
for an extended period of time, it is important that you fully charge
the battery and then disconnect it from the scooter prior to storage.
You will also want to store it in an area that is not too hot or too
cold, as extreme
temperatures will affect the life of the battery.
Doing all of these things regularly will ensure that your electric mobility scooter will last you for many years.
