My Personal Experience Using Nutrilite DoubleX

Baby Boomers 7 Ways To Exercise On The Cheap

Baby Boomer-supreme Jane Fonda started it all with her slinky leotard and goofy leg warmers. The one-time workout fad soon became a way of life for a generation that plans on living longer and better. Aging has its disadvantages, however, including the inability to perform high-impact aerobics or scale mountains in several bounds.

And so was born an entire industry designed to keep Baby Boomers in shape without eliminating precious cartilage or boring us stiff. As added advantages, exercise also reduces our arthritic pain, depression and anxiety.

My personal mantra is "Pain means no gain," so I'm always looking for low-impact workouts that don't hurt my wallet. Fortunately, there always seems to be a new exercise trend designed specifically for my generation. Here are a few healthy yet money-saving tips I've learned on my journey to physical fitness (which isn't by any means complete).

1. Go It Alone
It takes discipline to maintain your own workout schedule, but joining an expensive health club isn't really a necessity. We tell ourselves paying for membership will force us to exercise, but the thinning crowds after January attest to the fallacy of this concept.

2. Bring It Home
More than 10 million Americans use elliptical trainers as they're a knee-friendly cross between cross-country skiing and stair climbing. An equal number prefer a reclining stationary bike, according to Charlene Laino of WebMD. Both machines reduce stress on joints while eliminating the aching-back syndrome.

Fortunately, a lot of people buy such equipment and then use them as expensive clothes hangers. That means you should never have to buy a new machine. Craigslist is just filled with ads for home exercise equipment and some dealers offer refurbished machines. The key is to give it a whirl before handing over your cash or you, too, might end up with a pricey coat rack.

If you don't already have an MP3 player, this should be your second investment. Nothing impels you through a home workout like hot tunes or an hour-long podcast of "Car Talk." You can find free shipping codes for Best Buy and other retailers on such sites as FreeShipping.org, allowing you to skip the stuffy retail outlet and avoid paying for delivery charges.

3. Stay Limber
Stress is not only the province of youth; nor is muscle elasticity. Yoga helps sooth frayed nerves, improves flexibility and, not incidentally, provides a great aerobic workout. Pilates has many of the same advantages, but without all that Nirvana stuff.

There are countless DVDs and CDs to lead you through these exercises at home, but it's important to be selective. You want an instructor who gives detailed instructions, like "keep your stomach flat," "push away from the floor," etc. You don't want to fall into sloppy habits as this can lead to strained muscles without the desired impact.

4. Get Outside
Recumbent road bikes are fairly expensive, but you can always pick up a traditional bike for cheap at garage sales, thrift stores, FreeCycle.org or the inevitable Craigslist. If you have shoulder or back problems, invest in high-rise handlebars and have a professional adjust the bike to your body shape and size.

Naturally this is a fair-weather exercise, but there's an added advantage in that you can save on gas by biking to work.

5. Walk It Off
It costs nothing to cruise the neighborhood, checking out houses for sale while listening to music that moves you. Walking regularly with a friend is a great motivator and maintaining a conversation while keeping a steady pace allows you to monitor the amount of exercise youe actually getting. An article in AARP reports overweight people who walk 30 minutes per day, five days per week, can reduce their risk of diabetes by nearly 60 percent.

For bad weather, a second-hand treadmill is a good investment and, according to the Mayo Clinic, exerts about the same force as an elliptical machine.

6. Pump It Up
My girlfriends and I used to play a garage sale game to see who could first spot a set of weights for sale. Even if you just add weights to your arms and legs when walking, you'll increase your body strength while getting a good cardio workout.

7. Mix and Match
Performing just one form of exercise won't ensure you stay fit. A full regimen combines strength, flexibility and balance training (the latter provided by yoga and Pilates). Mixing it up each day also keeps the doldrums away.

Man 's Birthday 人日 - 7th Day of The Chinese New Year

Today is Sunday 29th January 2012.   Julie and I went to St. Agnes K. Y. Tsao Catholic Church for the morning Mass at 8:15 a.m..   Immediately after the mass there was a brief ceremony celebrating today being the Man's Birthday 人日according to the Chinese New Year tradition.   Each person at the mass was given a red packet 紅封包and two mandarin oranges by the parish priest.

The seventh day of the Chinese New Year traditionally known as Rénrì 人日 is the birthday for every one on earth, the day when everyone grows one year older. In some overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Singapore, it is also the day when tossed raw fish salad is eaten for continued wealth and prosperity. For many Chinese Buddhists, this is another day for veggies and avoid meat.

We left the church at around 9:45 a.m. Julie and I joined some friends we met in the church for dim sum at Golden Court Abalone Restaurant 黃金閣. When we arrived there it was around 10:05 a.m., we ordered some dim sum, dumpllings e.g. beef balls, chopped pork rib, shrimp rolls, rice noodle rolls, congee with dried oysters & seaweeds and ground meat with steamed rice.    It was a big day at 黃金閣 Restaurant as more and more people came and packed the restaurant full house.    They all came to celebrate the Chinese New Year ... the Year of The Dragon.

As the Chinese New Year atmosphere elevated in the restaurant, the first VIP came. He is the God of Prosperity財神 . He came in his traditional costume in shiny glow red and gold colors, fully dressed up with hat and boots the old fashion way. He mingled with the audience and talked with them giving out red packets for every body he met.

The atmosphere was brought to the climax when a team of kungfu youngsters and lion dancers came in starting the traditional lion dancing.   There were several lions in different colors and different sizes... red, gold, yellow, pink, green, blue. big, medium and small The dancers with the backup drum and gongs danced out their best for the reward of applause and lai se (red packet of money). People loved the lion dancing which brought back memories associated with our Chinese New Yea back in those years when we were young.   It was a great day with friends, good food and sweet memories.

How Super Bowl Ads Will Cater To Baby Boomers

In days of old -- before marketers wised up -- most television advertising was targeted towards the overvalued 18- to 35-year-old demographic. Then statistics revealed Baby Boomers have more discretionary income than any other age group and control 75 percent ($7 trillion) of the total American households' net worth.

Even in a recession, Boomers account for a dramatic 40 percent of total consumer demand, and they're demanding attention be paid.

Marketing clearly needed a makeover, and present ads reflect that change. L'Oreal hired Diane Keaton to talk about how "We're still worth it." Grey-haired and gorgeous John Slattery of "Mad Men" is hawking the Lincoln MKX. Disneyland is targeting the demographic that often pays for such expensive vacations by showing three generations enjoying the house that Mickey Mouse built. Then, naturally, there are all the erectile-dysfunction ads featuring virile and happy Baby Boomers leading uncompromising lives.

The trick is to strike the right note in television advertising. Boomers don't want to be stereotyped or treated with an ageist attitude, according to Brent Green, president of Denver-based marketing consultancy Brent Green & Associates.

"They want validity," said Green. "Few are frivolous or impulsive in their buying choices; rather, they are deliberate with a seasoned sense of themselves. They're set to shatter traditional assumptions about the sixth and seventh decades of life."

The generation born between 1946 and 1955 also appreciates a humorous approach and a harkening back to familiar imagery from a shared history.

Advertisers are already unveiling Super Bowl ads that take these factors into consideration:

Volkswagen has gone viral with "The Bark Side," featuring dogs giving a "ruff" treatment to Darth Vader's theme song.
Lipton is digging into the "Star Wars" archive as well, promoting their Brisk soda with a humorous version of the ultimate laser battle between Yoda and Darth Maul.
Kia's "Drive the Dream" prominently features hair band Motley Crew.

Considering this year's Super Bowl ads are going for an average of $3.5 million per 30 seconds, marketers are smart to play into this valuable demographic.

"(Boomers) go about fulfilling their needs differently, making their purchasing behavior unique," according to Immersion Interactive's book "Dot Boom: Marketing to Baby Boomers Through Meaningful Online Engagement."

"Dot Boom" also discusses the promise that online marketing to Baby Boomers holds. The recent popularity of Free Shipping Day, evidenced by $1.07 billion in sales, and the website FreeShipping.org, serve as exhibits one and two. Despite their affluence, Boomers value savings over brand loyalty when they shop the Internet.

Despite the over-sexed Super Bowl ads of the online company Go Daddy, other dot-commers are expected to take a more mature viewpoint.

Apple clearly was ahead of the trend with their "1984" ad, aired only once during the Super Bowl game of 1984. The iconic advertisement featured a Baby Boomer athlete shattering an image of Big Brother, referencing the generation's individualistic and athletic tendencies, as well as a book read by millions back in their high school days.

Postage Rates Increase Plus Other Shipping Trends

Attention all snail-mailers: the cost of postage just went up.

Effective Jan. 22, a first-class stamp costs $0.45, requiring non-Forever Stamp holders to stock up on festive Navajo necklace "make-up" stamps. This represents the first postage-rate increase in over two years and comes amidst a labor dispute between the U.S. Postal Service and over 240,000 workers.

Though postage rates continue to increase, online shopping trends toward free shipping as consumer demand drives retailers to forfeit delivery charges. Just last year, L.L. Bean and Nordstrom announced free shipping on all orders all the time. Similarly, Best Buy and Overstock offered free shipping with no minimums over the holiday season. And over 2,000 retailers offered some form of the promotion during Free Shipping Day, generating over $1 billion in online sales.

Still, some retailers will avoid offering free shipping all the time, enjoying the one-time boost in sales that intermittent promotions provide. For example, a Lands' End free shipping promotion is good through the end of this week, driving shoppers to get their orders in before the deadline.
