February 2011 Archives

During the last 20 years in Canada, I have moved 5 times.  Most of my friends teased me saying I love changing houses.   You know what, they are right.  I enjoy every house I moved to.  It brings  me new excitement every time we moved to a new environment.   Even the work involved I loved it.   They all made your body and brain working.   It is the  process of organizing and executing the work that brought in the  pleasure.    If you move the house in the right time it may bring in profit.

My friends, I shall make another move again.   It will be some time when my body and mind cannot cope with the maintenance work on my bungalow, such as snow shovelling, lawn mowing, shrubs trimming, trees cutting, gardening, painting, and repairs.  When will it come?  Simply no clue yet.   It does not matter.  I have a plan.  It is simple.  It is moving to a nursing home.... my kind of nursing home.  Enjoy the following slideshow which is exactly what I want.
salad man david.jpgSaladman David always smiles.
He serves customers as friends.
He always wants friends happy.

 I always feel happy, You know why?
Because I don't expect anything from anyone,
Expectations always hurt..
Life is short.. So love your life.. Be happy..
And Keep smiling.. Just Live for yourself and
Before you speak Listen
Before you write Think
Before you spend Earn
Before you pray Forgive
Before you hurt Feel
Before you hate Love
Before you quit Try
Before you die Live

Julie and I were invited to Chinese Professionals and Business Spring Banquet 2011.   Yesterday,  Angela, Susanna, Julie and I reached Royal Dragon Restaurant situated at 888 Dundas Avenue East Mississauga shortly before 7:00 p.m.    It was a full house with around 600 guests celebrating the Chinese Spring Banquet 2011 and  Mayor Hazel McCallion's 90th birthday.

DSC06405.JPG
People from different walks of professions and businesses, politicians, councillors and personnels from the Police and other provincial and federal government dressed in Chinese attire or red color chatting and socializing together.   There we met some familiar faces such as Dr. Joseph Wong of Yee Hong Geriactric Centre Toronto and the other Dr. Joseph Wong of Yee Hong Geriactric Centre Mississauga.

DSC06406.JPG
We met Mayor Hazel McCallion with whom all people in the banquet celebrated her 90 birthday.  At her 90th birthday she is as vibrant and energetic as she was at 39. She made a speech, a pretty long one yet I enjoyed every minute of that speech. It is a compelling speech. She is still in her very good shape as reflected in the way she talked with clarity and fun. What is most important is her leadership and positive energy bestowed to her audience through her words.  My respect and salute to this great lady of Canada!

DSC06404.JPG
I take this opportunity to thank Pierre and Mary for their invitation to this great celebration occasion.  By the way, the photo immediate above this short paragraph is the new dress I just bought for the Chinese Spring Banquet.   Hope you guys like this one and its color.

Have a good day.

Who needs to travel when you can see such beautiful places via computer?    I always say to friends I travel the world virtually in my home office.    I can shuttle from Canada to the rest of world  and enjoy all the beautifully destinations  in great details in my vitrual world.     This time it is a tiny place south west of Kunming , capital city of Yunnan Province  China Mainland.   This place is not listed in the tourist map of China because of its remoteness,  lack of infrastructure and lodging facilities.

kunming 1.jpg

The red land of the Eastern River is a place where one almost cannot find in China 's tourist maps or may be just a few introductory words.
It is located in the southwestern part of KUNMING  some 2600 ft. above sea level.  This remote area for lack of infrastructure and hotels most travel agencies would not go there.

kunming 2.jpg

But for those who have seen the pictures of the red land, no one can resist being attracted to its beautiful scenery! Just like a painting of a magnificent landscape.
The soil contains components such as oxidized iron.  This kind of metallic minerals after a long period of oxidation gradually produced this extraordinary reddish-brown soil.

kunming 3.jpg
In this place, mountains and hills, every inch of land is cultivated and planted to the maximum by the inhabitants thus causing unwanted erosive damage to the land.  Forestry is imminrntly requried as this magnificent landscape  could vanish some day.  Dongchuan Red Land represents Yunnan mountain valley's most attractive colors.  Waves of five, six kinds of colored mountains and lands look like multicolor waves on the vast land of mother earth.

kunming 4.jpg
Crops on the Red Land potatoes, oats, corn, oil flowers, vegetables.  are esthetically arranged.   When you look from afar, it is God's  painting on its vast land of plains and prairies.  For farming families each was given different sizes and shapes of land.  Each has its own kinds of crops and unique colorful lands.   During harvest time, the soil is shoveled up exposing her unusual redish color.

kunming 5.jpgThe best time for sightseeing tour is middle of  November  The whole mountain is blaneted with her beautifully colored cloth. I enjoy lying down in  the breeze and looking up at the ever-changing clouds in the sky.  Early in the morning, donkeys and carts fully loaded with harvest are heading for the marketlaces in town with a few kids walking their way to school.

Who is most clever, the philosopher, mathematician or the idiot?  Most would say the philosopher.  Some may say the mathematician.  With today culture and value system, nobody would tell you that among these three men, the idiot is the most clever.  Howver, in some real situation the idiot outwit the clever.

Now, three men a philosopher, a mathematician and an idiot, were out riding in the car when it crashed into a tree.

Before anyone knows it, the three men found themselves standing before the pearly gates of Heaven, where

St. Peter and the Devil were standing nearby.

"Gentlemen," the Devil started, "Due to the fact that Heaven is now overcrowded, therefore St. Peter has agreed to limit the number of people entering Heaven. If anyone of you can ask me a question which I don't know or cannot answer, then you're worthy enough to go to Heaven; if not, then you'll come with me to Hell."

The philosopher then stepped up, "OK, give me the most comprehensive report on Socrates' teachings," With a snap of his finger, a stack of paper appeared next to the Devil. The philosopher read it and concluded it was correct. "Then, go to Hell!" With another snap of his finger, the philosopher disappeared.

The mathematician then asked, "Give me the most complicated formula you can ever think of!" With a snap of his finger, another stack of paper appeared next to the Devil. The mathematician read it and reluctantly agreed it was correct. "Then, go to Hell!"
With another snap of his finger, the mathematician disappeared, too.

The idiot then stepped forward and said, "Bring me a chair!" The Devil brought forward a chair. "Drill 7 holes on the seat." The Devil did just that. The idiot then sat on the chair and let out a very loud fart.

Standing up, he asked, "Which hole did my fart come out from?"

The Devil inspected the seat and said, "The third hole from the right."

"Wrong," said the idiot, "it's from my ass hole."

And the idiot went to Heaven.
Buddies may I ask you a question?  Have you done any shopping online?  Personally, I have.   I have been shopping online for a long while.   It is on a selective basis.   I remember the first time, I did my shopping online is around 2000.   I purchased QuickTax which is a sotware for doing the annual tax reporting.   Since then I repeated my online purchase QuickTax every year.    This was my first shopping online experience.

To make my story short, most of my online shopping are computer related,  e.g. software to enhance the computer performance,  ebooks for knowledge and know-how pertianing to affiliate marketing, information products pertaining to Google Adsense.  Software programs are sent via vendor's download link.

 More recently,  for over 1 year already,  I purchased stuff such as toothpaste,  mouthwash, detergent, bath and body, cosmetics for Julie, kitchen knives,  vitamins and supplements, nutrients, health foods, etc.  They are special brand products not available from shopping malls and supermarkets.   I paid  through PayPal or via the Visa cards with online payment security.  Delivery is fast usually within two to three days via Canpar or Fedex.   I am very happy with the delivery, service as well as the payment security.

I talked to people of different age groups on their shopping online experience.   For younger people,  most of them have shopping online experience .  They like it for it is very convenient and it offers lot of choices for selection.   For baby boomers and seniors they are less inclined to shopping online.   They are more cautious and they prefer the traditional shopping unless for those who live in rural and suburban areas where traffic is not convenient.     Anyway,  shopping online is the global direction to go.   You can see all big brands are already expanding the online business.    It applies to both the tangible as well as intangible products.

rsa_logo.gif
BBB_logo.gifJust a friendly reminder,  when shopping online deal with the bigger and reputable  companies and companies you know and trust.

This is my first retirement Saturday morning.  I woke up pretty early as usual and did the same  old things like before.  Nothing has changed.  The same old thing for the same old man.

I checked my emails and found a buddy sent me the following message.   I received similar stuff in my emails  several times in the past.   I don't  like the way they distribute their messages.   It is a message of blessing if you do as they said,  but it is also a curse if you don't do what they said.   It is not right to intimidate other people especially in this case they are doing it in the name of Jesus the Christ.

I am a firm believer in Jesus Christ.  I practice his teaching and that is to love your neighbour and respect other people.  Above all, love and respect your God the Creator of the Universe, the visibles and invisibles.

Look at this closely

The President of Argentina received this picture and called it "junk mail", 8 days later his son died.. A man received this picture & immediately sent out copies..his surprise was winning the lottery. Alberto Martinez received this picture, gave it to his secretary to make copies but they forgot to distribute:   She lost her job & he lost his family. This picture is miraculous & sacred.

You were chosen to receive this Novena.

The moment you receive it, say :

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy   will be done, on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily   bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against   us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

It shall be well with you this coming year.   No matter how much your enemies try this year, they will not succeed.   You have been destined to make it and you shall surely achieve all your   goals this year.

For all of 2011, all your agonies will be diverted and victory and   prosperity will be incoming in abundance. Today confirms the end of   your sufferings, sorrows, pain and hardships.  You are given JOY.

This is a Novena from Mother Theresa that started in 1952.

It has never been broken. Within 48 hours send 20 copies (Or as many as you   can - God does know if you don't have 20 people to send it to.   It's the effort and intent that counts.) to family and friends.

This is a powerful Novena. Couldn't hurt. Can only help.   Please do not break it.

Angelo rang in around 11:00 a.m. saying that we shall have lunch together this afternoon. This morning I didn't have any car. He therefore came and pick me up at around 12:30 p.m. We hit the Highway 401 and soon we arrived Delta Hotel at Kennedy and Highway 401.

We took the lift to Sagano Japanese Restaurant situated at the top floor of Delta Hotel.  At this restaurant people can experience the beautiful panoramic view of Scarborough while enjoying the finest traditional Japanese Cuisine. Angelo's recommendation was the Japanese lunch box.  One for each of us.  With the gracious surroundings and wonderful services we enjoyed the tempting Japanese assorted food in lunch boxes. Everything in the box was excellent from grilled chicken, tempura, salmon sushi, tuna sushi, clam sushi, fried sweet potatoes, fried mushroom, cooked bean sprouts and broccoli.

In our telephone conversation,  when Angelo told me he would come to pick me up, I promised him I would pay the bill. However, it was Angelo  paying the bill.  I thanked him so much as he made my day when I was alone at home and without my car.

Thank you buddy Angelo.

What will happen when Bill C-389 passes?  In short, it would be anyone who claims to be a "she" can legally enter the lady's washroom and other people cannot stop him legally.  Is it dangerous for the ladies and girls?    I think it will open the washroom doors to sexual predators.

It is important for Canadians to defeat Bill C-389 before it is too late.

It is known that this private member's bill was passed by the House of Commons.  Canadians should not let it go unstopped.   People,  it  is now up to us and the Senate to defeat this bill.

Here is the link  www.conservativevalues.ca  where we can sign the petition to stop further move towards the
Canada legislation of Bill C-389.  Please act now.  It takes couple of minutes only.   Make our voice known before it's too late!

Boomer Cooking - Pork Tenderloin

| 1 Comment | 0 TrackBacks
Pork tenderloin was the main dish for dinner yesterday.   It is pretty simple and easy.    The method is as follows:

  • Pork tenderloin  1 1/2 lb
  • Thyme powder   little bit
  • Sesame oil          little bit
  • Soya sauce         1 table spoon
I already marinated the pork tenderloin and kept it overnight in the fridge.  Couple of hours before I put the pork tenderloin into the oven  I also applied some dijon mustard all over its surface.  This would make the meat more tasty and appetizing.    At 5:45 p.m. I got the oven set at the cooking time for 45 minutes and temperature at 400 C degrees.

When ready take it out and slice it.  Put them nicely in the dish with decor.  I used cooked broccoli as decor.  To prepare it by cooking it in boiling water for 3 minutes.  They were then ready to serve.  Julie came home around 6:30 p.m. and the hot and delicious pork tenderloin was ready for our dinner.

This morning I made my own breakfast.  Most of the time I have my breakfast in the workplace.   It is the cafeteria of IBM HQ at 3600 Steeles.  Who make my breakfast there? Sometimes it was Mary and sometimes Bala.  Of course, I missed them and their beautiful breakfast - a bagel with scrambled egg, cheese, lettuce and tomato.   Now I have plenty of time I make the breakfast and post it here for my buddies and readers.

DSC06392.JPGToday's breakfast is scrambled egg with mozzarella cheese  in whole wheat bread, toasted.  An apple and a yogart.   Cooking is one of my hobbies.   Tune in for the other good and nutritious food I make.

By the way the next hobby I want to mention here is singing.  I love singing.  I love songs.  It can be any songs, Chinese opera, Chinese pop songs, English  pop songs, classic and opera.   I enjoy listening to the melody, the lyrics and the above all the feeling of being immerged in the song and music.  I would have more time to pursue my love for music and songs.

Yesterday, I got an email from Mickey Carroll.  Thank you Mickey for dropping by this blog.  I appreciate your comment and video.  You don't mind I put it here sharing the joy with other boomers visiting my blog.  I wish I could sing like you singing and playing my guitor together with friends with common interest entertaining ourselves and other people.

I like veggies and fruit even for my lunch.   When I was working in IBM at Steeles 3600  I had my salad lunch.  Now I still stick to this habit of eating lettuces, veggies and some fruits.   Today,  I have 12 Canton shrimp wontons.   I like wontons so much even as a kid back in Hong Kong.   For wontons, dont give me five.  I like twelve.  Cooking is easy and simple as follows:.

DSC06387.JPG

Cooking instructions:
Do not defrost.  Put wontons in a large pot of boiling water for 3 to 5 minutes.  Stir lightly wiht a pair of chopsticks.  When wontons float to the surface it is ready to serve

By the way, Canton shrimp wonton is  product of Canada.  It is available at most of the Chinese supermarkets in Ontario Canada.

When I first came across this book it was back in 2002. My eyes caught the bold statement on the header of her book How I Made $436,737 Last Year Selling Other People's Stuff  Online.  Out of curiosity I purchased the book.  Memories recalled that I have my first website already running for affiliate programs.  That is ClickBucks.com dated back in year 2000.  Time really swifts away without our awareness.

As affiliate marketer there are no products to develop,  carry or ship; and no orders to process or refund. All that and more are handled directly by the merchants.   However, it still takes a little know-how to build a site that turns visitors into customers, and Rosalind shares her extensive  knowledge in "The Super Affiliate Handbook: How I Made $436,797 Last Year".

The Super Affiliate Handbook takes you step by step and discusses a variety of ways to earn money online.  Rosalind gives specific examples, her own websites and her own niche markets as illustrative samples.

She also provides info on how to set up a website or blog, inserting specific text links or html code and web hosting. The detailed and easy-to-follow instructions are well worth the price of her
Handbook.

Rosalind Gardner started her net business part time  as affiliate marketer since 1998.  Her full-time affiliate marketer career started since 2000... and very successfully all these years.

Her ebusiness success has since been profiled in many venues. Her interviews appear in the late Corey Rudl's 'Secrets to Their Success', as well as in glossy magazines such as by Six Figure Income, Small Business Opportunities and Revenue.

Today's lunch is Chinese dumplings.  I want to eat a bit light because yesterday 's lunch celebration at Akina Japanese Restaurant was way over quota.   I took 12 dumplings (frozen vegetables, pork & leek dumplings).  You can buy it from any supermarket.   The way to cook is simple and it takes about 20 minutes.

I used a non-stick pan to cook the dumplings.   The method is as follows:

  • Put approximately 1 1/2 table spoon of vegetable oil into a frying pan.  Heat frying pan with medium heat.  Place the frozen dumponngs in the frrying pan.  Cook until the bottom of the dumplings are slightly brown.

  • Add cold water into the frying pan to cover 1/4 of the dumpling height .  Cover frying pan and cook in high heat.

  • Turn to medium heat when most of the water has evaporated .  Continue to cook until all the water has evaporated and the bottom of the dumplings are golden brown.

There are other ways for cooking dumplings,  e.g. boiling, steaming, and deep frying.   All cooking instructions are there on the outer bag.  Simply follow the instruction and you can cook your own dumpling.

For today's lunch,  twelve dumplings are enough for me.   Have a good day.

Today is a milestone for saladman David.  It is a moment when the new chapter unfolds marking the transformation from saladman to netrepreneur.   So, I am  officially retired yet I am far from retiring.   I would spend more time in writing and updating my blog and websites.  Of course, I have to give top priority on maintaining and optimizing my health being the most important goal.

Early this morning, as I checked my mail and found out one of my buddies was admitted to hospital.   No definitive findings came pending the results of the scan.  However, as we were told in the email the the symptoms of unable to recognise her close family members, and also unable to speak properly to express oneself.   She has a mild stroke.  I prayed that her condition would become better soonest.

At 11:30 a.m. we hit the road for lunch with the family celebrating my 65th birthday and retirement.     Here below are some photos taken at  lunch in Akina Japanese Restaurant at Kennedy and Denison.  Food is fresh and delicious.    On top of the excellent Japanese food I also got a birthday present from Julie .   You know what?  It is a Chinese kung fu dress.    I tried on two dresses.   Do you know which one I like best?  Give me your guess and I shall let you know the answer in my future post.

Have a good day!

My last working day was 18th February 2011.    As of 21st February 2011,  I am officially retired and a new chapter will unfold.  An online business is my cup of tea.   I am transforming myself from saladman David to netrepreneur.

blog monetization.jpgThis morning, I worked pretty early in the monring on my blog adding two new monetization features to my blog.  The first monetization feature is an online shop selling a wide range of stuff. To name a few it included nutrition and wellness products, cosmetics for makeup, skin care, hair management, vitamin supplements, appliances for home, organic cleaning detergents for kitchen, kitchen wares, glasswares, etc.   This online shop also carries big brand name products.  Come and check it out.  You will be amazed.

By the way, it is a trend now among young people shopping online for stuff they like.   For example, our children like to browse the internet looking for items such as fashion, makeup, bath and body items, nutrition and wellness stuff. They prefer this type of shopping because they can save a lot of time.  The ordered goods will soon be delivered to the door step within couple of days by UPS, Canpar, Fedex, etc.   Guys, ff you have questions, just email me or put it in the comment area.  I will get back to you soonest.

The second additonal feature is an ebookstore.   As the name implies ebooks and digital information products are available for sale.  According to research, people tend to buy these type of products online.    Later  on, I would add some software and games sutiable for boomers.   Buddies , check these features at the sidebar and you won't miss them.

I also put additional commercial links in the footer at the bottom of the homepage in case  you are looking for some other products such as bath and body, phytonutrients, etc.  Immediate above the header, I  put a link to the amazing story of Rosalind Gardner and her success in the online business.   It is an excellent program for those who would like to start a new online business.

After updating my blog with the above mentioned features,  I took my car to pick up Tony and then hit the Highway 401 to meet Angelo at his home.  We changed car and continue our day for the Toronto Autoshow 2011 at Convention Center Toronto Downtown.

Keep tune in for any new monetization development.

The gather together party at Luk Yue Restaurant kicked off at 7:30 p.m. yesterday.  It was Friday night 18th February 2011 when 15 buddies met again.  I could not recognize  Francis, Lo Bing Yin and Dr. Chan Kam Shing.  The last time we met each other was 1964 when we were teenagers.  Now some of old gang already grandpa.
La Salle Old Boys 64 in Toronto (6) first dish.JPG
Francis, Bing Yin retired already from his professoin being a chemist.  He sat next to me and he showed me his old photo collection.  To my  surprise he has a group photo when both of us graduated in primary 6.  My old memories works at excellent condition.  I recognize almost every face of primary school mates and teachers.   Most of the full names, first names  and nicknames came back with the old memories.  Francis who I still called Lo Bing Yin in Chinese also showed me the group photos when we were at La Salle College.   A group  of young men full of energy and ambiiton envisioning their future development.  These young men now are the boomers celebrating their reunion and retirement.

I could not recognise Chan Kam Shing.  In my old memory he was a nice teenage boy with some baby fat.   He is now much thinner than I expect and his thick hair are much less on his head    He is a medical doctor practicing first in Hong Kong,  then New Zealand and now in Melbourne Australia.  Before returning home he will visit some good friends in New York.

Victor Yau Shing Sung was a retired techie from Washing DC.  This guy  likes Toronto so much that he came here already several times satisfying himself in the wine and dine among his old time buddies.  He makes every meeting interesting and enjoyable.  He is loved for his open and optimistic character, his stories telling skill,  his naughty experiences and wisdom are equally impressive. What a great guy and a great friend!
La Salle Old Boys 64 in Toronto (7) david ho.JPG

The other buddies who would meet each other on regular basis in Toronto includes Angela, Susanna, Pierre, Mary, David Ho and his wife, Tony, David Au, Julie, Michael.   George could not come for some personal reason.   They are the La Salle Old Boys (1964) in Toronto.

A short note expressing my appreciation to these buddies.  Firstly to Angelo for arranging this party celebrating reunion and retirement.  To us Angelo is our big brother.    Secondly to Chan Kam Sing and Victor Yau for their coming from far far away.  Thirdly to all other participating buddies for their generosity in paying my share of the final bill
.

Today is the last day of my retirement countdown.  I started the day at 9:30 a.m.   Co-workers came and greeted me.   We did not have any party but we had a happy time in the breakfast table chatting with one another for a short while before the  morning work started.

In the cafeteria I met Lois and I thank her for the gift card and the enclosed 649 tickets.   I thanked her for giving me the opportunity that I might get rich and famous if and when I became the sole winner of the 649 lottery.   I wanted to see Jim but I did not find him.  Anyway, I thank Jim here for his gift a very nice scarf.  Hope he would come to my blog and we get connected via the net.

Some people came to bid farewell to me while I was serving at the Sandwich Central during lunch hours.  I am so thankful to meet these nice people at IBM 3600.   You know what, I also had a chance to see Mr. Bruce Ross the president of IBM Canada in the cafeteria.   I went to meet him and thanked him personally.   He is a very nice guy.   A great guy who has the time and heart to talk to the little guys like myself.   Wish him all the very best, health and success all the way.

The countdown went on in hours, then in minutes when I had to say goodbye to my colleagues, one by one including Tony and Geetha.  All the best, guys.

Meanwhile, I am awaiting the party tonight among 15 buddies celebrating my retirement and 65th birthday.   Tune in tomorrow for the details.    Have a good day.

Today is my last salad day working at the salad station.   It is a mixed feeling.   I felt excited as the countdown approached its second last day before retirement.  A new chapter will soon open.   I don't have any big  plan but I am sure I shall be very busy working on things I have great interest.  To name a few blogging, singing. reading,  cooking,  etc.  If you have intersest to know more check out my previous post on retirement activities.

As I talked to the people coming to my salad station during the lunch hours,  most of them are my fans and they come regularly.   I shall miss them.  They are really nice.   I take this opportunity to wish them good health and happiness.  A friendly reminder for every body:   Eat healthy.  Be nice to your body and your body will be nice to you.    Salad would make you feel great.

Time flies as I look back.  I worked in IBM 3600 almost nine years.  It seems just like yesterday.   The kitchen,  the work table, the veggies sinks,  dish washing room,  the various stations such as the Tim Hortons,  Swiss Chalet, Big Pita, the Menutainment, the Culinary, the Trattoria, the Grille, the Pizza Pizza, the Wild Greens, the Sandwich Central, the Cafeteria are the venues for lot of memories during that period when colleagues worked hard to have the job done.  They are the little guys who grow the business in good time and sustain the business during the harsh days.   They are the great people who offered the great products and services to customers.

Life is enriched as we made mistakes as well as we acheived goals.  We are all learners as we learn a little bit each day.   Sometimes, we have to unlearn something.  For example if I want to relax and enjoy life during retirement,  I have to unlearn some of my working habit.  I used to be a very serious worker.  It was too serious at times.

Finally,  I like to thank Melvin for making the beautiful and delicious retirement cake.   A hearty 'thank you' to my co-workers for your generosity giving me a Walmart gift card inside the retirement greeting card.  Guys, I like your nice greetings.  Thanks to Mary for her smart photos.  Thanks to Tony and Geetha for their support and co-ordination of this retirement event for me.

I also like to take this opportunity to thank Jim and Lois for their greeting cards, best wishes and gifts.

By the way, have a good day and see you guys tomorrow.
    .
In the third century AD, there was a tyrant named Claudius in ancient Roman Empire .  Just a block from the tyrant's palace was a church where Valentine served as a Christian Brother.  Everyone respected him, young and old,  rich and poor  always clustered around him listening Valentine's lithurgy before the altar. Unfortunately, the war broke out and Roman tyrant recruited a large number of citizens to the battlefield.  People complained, because they did not want to leave their families.  Among students and young lovers, they could not bear to be separated. Claudius was furious, he heralded that wedding were not allowed and engaged marriages were immediately dissolved. Many young people bid farewell to their loved ones.  People were angry.  Young girls were grieved and depressed due to the loss of loved ones.

Valentine was very upset on the tyrant's abuses.   A couple came to the church to seek his help, Brother Valentine quietly conducted their wedding  at the altar. People spreaded this news, one to tens and hundreds.  The message finally passed into the palace, Claudius ordered the soldiers to arrest Valentine.  They burst into the church. Brother Valentine was towed away along with the wedding couple.  People begged the tyrant for forgiveness but in vain.

St-Valentine-Kneeling-In-Supplication.jpgWhen the Valentine was jailed,  he healed the blind daughter of the governor.  The tyrant heard the message was very afraid.  In order to eradicate Valentine, he decided to behead Valentine.  On that night before the execution, Brother Valentine wrote a letter to the governor's daughter bidding his caring affection farewell.   In the letter inscribed these words:  From Your Valentine, AD, 270  14th February.

情人節的由來

I got the following message from a buddy.   It is interesting and appalling at the same time.  People 's privacy is totally exposed if you are not careful enough and unawared the mirror you are using is actually 2-way glass in the restroom.   It can happen anywhere in your travel.  I therefore put it here and share this message with all buddies.  Meanwhile, enjoy and be alert and careful.

A  Mirror or a 2-Way Glass?
How  can you tell when you are in a room, restroom,
motel  etc. with a mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here's how:  I thought it was quite interesting! And I
know in  about 30 seconds you're going to do what I did
and  find the nearest mirror.

Do you know how to  determine if a mirror is 2-way or
not? A policewoman  who travels all over the US and
gives  seminars and techniques for businesswomen
passed this  on.

When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel  rooms,
changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for  sure
that the  seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall
is a  real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e.,
they  can see you, but you can't see them)? There have
been  many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in
female  changing rooms . It is very difficult to
positively  identify the surface by looking at it.

So, how do  we determine with any amount of certainty
what type  of mirror we are looking at?

mirror.jpgJust conduct this  simple test: Place the tip of your
fingernail against  the reflective surface and if there
is a GAP between  your fingernail and the image of the
nail, then it is  GENUINE mirror. However, if your
fingernail DIRECTLY  TOUCHES the image of your nail,
then  BEWARE! IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!

two way glass.jpg"No Space, Leave  the Place" So remember, every time
you see a mirror,  do the "fingernail test." It doesn't
cost you  anything.

REMEMBER. No Space, Leave the  Place:

Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends,  sisters,
daughters, etc.

Men: Share this with  your wives, daughters,
daughters-in-law, mothers,  girlfriends and/or friends.
I remember Prof. Shing-Tung Yau of Mathematics Harvard University said, "The lifestyle of people changed because of the develpment of science, Science is built upon mathematics". I am not a mathematics guy but I believe there is lot of truth in his statement.

People who excell in mathematics can express their thought with mathemataics. It is amazing. The following is a video about the beauty of mathematics. It opens my eyes. Guys enjoy!

Tomorrow 14th February 2011 Monday is Valentines Day. Just take this opportunity to wish you guys have a Happy Valentines Day. Meanwhile happy shopping and enjoy the wine and dine of this festive day. Have you got any gift for your love ones?

happy valentine's day.jpgBy the way, in Hong Kong and China, the common practice is the men gives chocolate, flowers or both to their lovers.  Valentine's Day is called 情人節 which literally means 'The Lovers Festival' . This is the modern Valentines Day.

According to the Chinese traditional people in love celebrated on the 7th day of July of the Lunar Calender commemorating this special day when the cow-herder and weaving maid were allowed to be together. Hence, in the Chinese communities people may practice both the Modern and the traditional Valentines day.

 In ancient China, magic was known as illusion.  You guys should watch this one.   This is sent to me this early morning from a buddy.  It is in Mandarin.  For those who don't understand Mandarin,  you could still enjoy this incredible magic.

The young magician performed his magic for the Central Television  2011 New Year Celebration.  I was blown away watching him directing the gold fishes to march orderly in different patterns .   I could not beleive my eyes as he moved the gold fishes from a painting to a fish tank.  Check it out.

Amazing!

Egyptian army assured her people and the neighbouring countries such as Israel, Palestine, Iran, Iraq and other Arabian countries in the Middle East region. that they will honour and adhere to the treaties already signed during the Mubarak era.  This is to assure people in the regions  a smooth transition for democracy for Egypt and her people.

People all over the world embraced this peaceful revolution.  They expressed their blessings to Egyptians with their best wishes.   As the Egypt Revolution was televized throughout the world,  people were so worried doubting this might turn out to be bloody and ugly.  The outcome is the pride of all Egyptians including Mubarak and his regime.  People now in Cairo and other cities are doing the cleanup and restorations.  Hopefully, the country will soon back to her normal.

Anyway, the revolution like any revolutions will be long and the days ahead are difficult.   Egypt and her people rejoiced and celebrated as the country turned on a new page.  With the world's blessings and the wisdom of   people of Egypt  their quest for democracy will be satisfied.  Peace, democracy and prosperity to Egypt and her people.

A buddy sent me her friendly reminder.  I thank her for her reminding me of some of the old stuff I almost forgot.  You know we all need to be reminded sometime.  The following is what she sent me and I wish you guys will enjoy reading it to the end.   I am proud that I am one of those Old Gang.  Give me your thought by writing yours on the comment area so that every body can share your thought.

No matter what our kids and the new generation think about us,
     WE ARE AWESOME !!!
    OUR Lives are LIVING PROOF !!!

    To Those of   Us  Born
    1925 - 1970  :

    At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don't read anything else, please
    read what he said.

    Very well stated, Mr. Leno.
    ~~~~~~~~~
    TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
    1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!!
    First, we survived being born to mothers
    who may have smoked and/or drank
    while they were pregnant.
    They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna
    from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
    Then, after that trauma, we were
    put to sleep on our tummies
    in baby cribs covered
    with bright colored lead-based paints.
    We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
    locks on doors or cabinets,
    and, when we rode our bikes,
    we had baseball caps,
    not helmets, on our heads.
    As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags,
    bald tires and sometimes no brakes..
    Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm
    day was always a special treat.
    We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
    We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
    We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon.
    We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
    And we weren't overweight.
    WHY?
    Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
    We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as
    long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
    No one was able to reach us all day.
    --And, we were OKAY.
    We would spend hours building  our go-carts
    out of scraps and then ride them down the hill,
    only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running
    into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
    We did not have Play Stations, Nintendos and
    X-boxes. There were no video games, no
    150 channels on cable, no video movies
    or DVDs, no surround-sound or CDs,
    no cell phones, no personal computers,
    no Internet and no chat rooms.
    WE HAD FRIENDS
    and we went outside and found  them!
    We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones
    and teeth, and there were no lawsuits
    from those accidents.
    We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches,
    ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and
    no one would call child services to report abuse.
       We ate worms, and mud pies made from dirt, and
    the worms did not live in us forever.
    We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
    made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and
    -although we were told it would happen- we did not
    put out very many eyes.
    We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
    knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked
    in and talked to them.
     Little League had tryouts and not everyone
    made the team. Those who didn't had to learn
    to deal with disappointment.
    Imagine that!!
     The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was
    unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
    These generations have produced some of the best
    risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever.
    The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion
    of innovation and new ideas...
    We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
     how to deal with it all.
    If YOU are one of those born
    between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!
    You might want to share this with others who have
    had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers
    and the government regulated so much of our lives
    for our own good.
     While you are at it, forward it to your kids, so they will
    know how brave and lucky their parents were.
    Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?
    ~~~~~~~
    The quote of the month
    by
    Jay Leno:

       "With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

    For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us..go ahead and delete this.
    For the rest of us.....
    please pass this on.

  • Egypt Revolution unfolded and surprised the world indeed
  • Millions of Egyptians demonstrated their protest in peace
  • Against the government of Mubarak for its corruption
  • People, men women. boys and girls with determination
  • Proclaimed their quest for freedom and change
  • Army and police were there serving and protecting
  • The revolution led by their quest for reform
  • Through youths, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and cell phones
  • Glad to see the revolution evolved in peace
  • Happy to see the country started its new leaf
  • Egypt and her people with transition in peace and order
  • Army and people rejoice, awe and honour

When people talk about retirement, most of them would focus of the retirement money.  I would agree money is essential for a quality retirement but the most important is health.  Without good health retirement life is miserable.  People would right away realize its importance if they spend some time in the hospital with those people sick undergoing great pain.

Health is priceless.   We are not aware of its value most of the time.  We value it only when we lose it.   It is is better we do something proactive to keep our health in good shape.  Today, I would like to focus on heart health.  Here below are some suggestions:

  • Don't Do the following
Don't smoke and quite your smoking if you are a smoker.   Cigarettes smokers have a much higher risk for developing heart disease.  It is two to three times that of a non-smoker.

Don't over stress yourself.  Plenty of research studies show that stresses may induce heart conditions and heart attack.  It is always good to participate in social functions that reduce and manage stress, e.g., yoga, physical exercise, line-dance.

Don't take too much red meats including beef, pork and  internal organs.

Don't take
sugar, sodium and fat in excessive quantities, avoid them.

  • Do the Following
Take your medical checkup at least annually.  If you have some forms of chronic disease talk to your family doctor, may be you need to have your medical checkup every six months or more frequent basis.

Take your medicines regularly so as to control your blood pressure adequately.  Blood pressure tells us how well your heart works. If you have consistent high blood pressure, your doctor may prescribe medicines to lower and maintain an appropriate level.  It is also important to control your cholesterol level because cholesterol level can be a risk factor to heart disease. You should have this checked regularly by your doctor and treat the condition with appropriate medicines.

Control your body weight.  This is another important cardiac risk factor. If you are overweight or obese, you may have other health risks.  When obesity is joined with factors such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure, the risks are high and dangerous. Take steps to lose weight and lessen your risk for heart disease.

Workout exercises regularly
Inactivity of both mind and body is another cardiac risk factor.  Engage yourself in some of activity such as mall walking. It must be routine, quick and brisk.

Take plenty of vegetables and fruits
Choose a diet that contains whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables with high fiber content and rich in phytonutrients.

Eat fish regularly.  They are rich in omega 3 which is excellent for our heart and blood vessels.

WHO SAID POETRY IS BORING

My retirement day falls on the 21st of February 2011. It is The Family Day and this is a public holiday.    The 18th of February 2011 is my last working day.  As I am doing the countdown there will 8 days left prior to that last working day.   More and more people asked what would I do during the retirement.   Would you take a vacation or any holiday?  My answer is I won't take any vacation but every day will be holiday.

Actually I have given much thought to my retirement activities.   There are plenty of them and they will keep me very busy.  Here below is the abstract from my previous post:

Fitness exercise/yoga
Body fitness and health are important during retirement.  To maintain the health and body fitness regular exercise such as walking, going to the gym and yoga are the things I would do and would do them regularly.

Blogging

I started blogging several years already.  It was fun for myself as I like to express my ideas and share these ideas with other people who have the similar interest.    Blogging is also a very good exercise for the brain.   You know what,  with blogging I can make some extra money for my out of pocket expenses.

Video production
I want to produce my own videos.   I would start searching for a suitable video camera and start making video shooting for my daily activities.  Hopefully, I would be able to show you guys my videos on my own blog.  What I have in mind is David Singing old time songs such as 'My Way' '
Moon River'  'Green Green Grass of Home' in the videos.

Singing
I like singing.  I like it so  much that I can sing for hours alone by myself. I like singing the old songs, the pop songs both Chinese and English and Chinese opera.  I would join some buddies who are singing fanatics like me.  Probably, we would meet and sing every week.

Guitar/piano lessons
I don't know playing guitar.  I have one in the closet.  I would like to learn guitar in my forthcoming retirement.   Piano is also my next favourite.  A little hesitation here because it costs a lot more.

Gardening
Both in my front and backyard I have plenty of trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials.  I need to do some research to know them and to look after them better.  This is a promise to myself as well as the previous owner of my existing home.

House maintenance
The house I bought for retirement is an old house built in 1958.  In order to keep this house in good condition, regular maintenance such as painting, repairing, updating are very important.  It would be lot of action and plenty of exercises for me.

Cooking
It is my favourite because I enjoy doing it.  I like eating and sharing good food with friends.  I would write on a regular basis about cooking and their recipes here in this blog for my buddies and readers.

Library
The library building is around the corner at the intersection of Yonge and Major Mackenzie.    I like going there browse through the books and I would be a happy man.

Voluntary works
What I have in mind is going to Yee Hong and the similar nursing homes to entertain  the seniors with my songs, the old time songs.  These songs would bring back lot of sweet memories for them.  I make them happy and I am happy too.

Tea party
This is the best time when old buddies meet and talk or just sitting there without talking but don't feel bored.   The reason, each of them is special in some way sometime and somewhere long long ago.  We drink tea or coffee some with sugar some without.   Of course, we would eat some Chinese dim sum.

My buddy wrote me this after reading my post on "Boomers Gossip - Retirement Activities":

The way you put it, you will have a plate full.
Don't worry.  You will complain you don't have enough time, especially when you are "fortunate" enough to take care of your grand children.
Trust me, you'll be too busy to attend to your other plans.

Tony
PS - Info from current retirees

By the way,  there will a celebration among my buddies in Toronto celebrating my forthcomng retirement.  We shall go to Luk Yue Chinese Restaurant and have a good time there.    I should thank my buddy Angelo for organizing this celebration party.   He told me some old friends will come over from far away,  for example one from Washington and one from New Zealand.    I am so thankful  for their coming.    I am so very thankful for the other buddies who would join this eating party.    Meanwhile, very much looking forward to this date.    Thank you buddies.

In my previous posts on salads, e.g., vegggie salad, cheese salad, chicken salad, protein salad, I made recommendations about salad dressings.   There are plenty of dressings out there in the supermarkets. The popular ones are:

  • Greek dressing
  • Italian dressing
  • Thousand Island dressing
  • Balsamic dressing
  • Sesamine Thai dressing
  • Sundried Tomatoes dressing
  • Caesar dressing
  • French dressing
  • Ranch dressing
  • Rasperry dressing
  • Grapefruit dressing
  • Blue cheese dressing

nutrition facts label.jpgThey are so tasty that people are hooked to them when taking their salad.   Here is a friendly reminder to you guys.   All tasty foods are not good to your body.   Though it is a generalized statement but it contains grains of truth. Read the Nutrition Facts label carefully before any purchase.   By the way, these tasty dressings contain a lot of calories for their  sugar content in the first place.  Secondly, they  contain some ingredients which are totally undesirable for healthy eating, e.g.,  saturated fat, MSG, sodium, preservatives, sugar alternatives, artificial flavour, food dyes, etc.   When you are taken these dressings into your body, the unhealthy stuff and extra calories accumulate in your body.  Over time, these accumulations become excessive and they are harmful to your body.

If you like to eat healthy, you should take the salad but not with these dressings.  Take you salads with a little bit of olive oil is good.   You can also add a little red wine vinegar on top.

Another alternative for dressings are the yogarts.   Mix your salad with your favourtie yogart is ideal if you are a weight watcher.

Meanwhile, enjoy the following video on more details about salad dressings.

Boomers Health - Aging

Even the little bright stars age over time
Aging starts from the moment existence starts
And ends on the moment when existence stops

aging.jpg

When a sperm fertilizes an egg aging starts
Aging not in a linear way
Grows from small and tender
Become strong and beautiful
Ages and weakens towards the end

People men and women
Aging is multi-dimensional
A tiny infant tenderly grows
Infancy, childhood, preadolescence, adolescence
Early adulthood, Middle adulthood, Late adulthood
Each day he picks up strength and wisdom

One day baby infant become so old
His strength weakens and body withers
Yet his wisdom widens his vision to see His Creation
Through Creation he see Him, wonder and adore Him
His  knowledge over the world events grows and expands
Time will come when he becomes so old
His life withers just like candle light at its very end

Life of flowers is similar
A tiny bud tenderly sprouts
Beautifully blossoms and  grows
In her shy way flowers open
Colors glows and overflows
Time shatters flowers withers and petals fall
On the ground where lives rest and restore.

Aging is a little bit of life dying away each day
A wisdom that grows a tiny bit each way
It is natural for everything and everyone
It is respectful waiting for an everlasting life.

Buddies, have you ever thought of this quesiton?

Orange is my favourite fruit.  I like its color, smell and taste.  There are different brands and the best known is Sunkist.  As we all know, orange is  a member of the citrus fruit.

I still remember when I was a child oranges were used for their high content of vitamin C, which prevents scurvy. Scurvy is caused by vitamin C deficiency, and can be prevented by having 10 milligrams of vitamin C a day. An early sign of scurvy is fatigue. If ignored, later symptoms are bleeding and bruising easily.  Do you know that lemon juice is used to relieve the pain of bee stings.

Citrus fruit juices, such as orange, lime and lemon, may be useful for lowering the risk factors for specific types of kidney stones. Orange juice may help prevent calcium oxalate stone formation. Lemons have the highest concentration of citrate of any citrus fruit, and daily consumption of lemonade has been shown to decrease the rate of stone formation.

citrus fruits.jpgCitrus fruit  are rich in colours and nutrients.  Will you be surpised that they contain over 10 nutrients::

  • Vitamin C
  • Riboflavin
  • Pantothenic acid
  • Thiamin
  • Niacin
  • Vitamin B6
  • Folate
  • Potassium,
  • Calcium,
  • Phosphorus,
  • Magnesium
  • Copper
  • Fiber

Citrus fruit is also very rich in phytonutrients, e.g.
carotenoids (the red, yellow,orange pigments in fruits and vegetables), flavanoids.  They are the plant nutrients which have a wide range of physiological effects on human health.  They provide health protection against various diseases such as cancer, heart disease and age related degeneration according to recent research.

By the way, there is increasing evidence that the consumption of whole foods is better than isolated food components such as dietary supplements or nutraceuticals.  Hence, for vitamin C and other nutrients, remember to take orange and other citrus fruits and not  the supplement and nutraceutical  tablets.

Boomers Health - Low Back Pain

| 2 Comments | 4 TrackBacks
There was lot of snow during this several weeks.  Snow shuffling in the morning is a routine each morning before we can drive the car to the workplace.   It is back breaking especially during the snow storm.   Don't misunderstood I am complaining.   I am not but simply take this opportunity to remind guys to shuffle in the right way.

snow shuffle.jpgWhen shuffle snow remember do it slow and take your time.   This applies to the young guys as well as the boomers.   It is always advisable to start with the easy job first and do it slowly if you do not do your warm up exercise prior to the actual snow shuffling.   For example, don't jump to do shuffle the wet and heavy snow bank when you can shuffle those light snow on the sidewalk.

The next important thing is the shuffling posture.   Always remember not to use your back to speed up your shuffling.  You should use the power of your hands, arms and legs.  Don't use actions that may involve your back to exert lot of power such as swinging out shuffles of snow.  It can seriously hurt your back.  If you use the way to shuffle admittedly you can work faster.  You may not aware it hurts your back until the pain appears.     Most people get their back pain from this during the winter time.   I was  told by my family doctor and  I was one of these guys who shuffle fast but in an incorrect way.

low back pain.jpg

Recently, my low back came back again.   It was due to  poor posture.  However, it was not the snow shuffling posture.  It was the sitting posture on a very comfortable 'lover's sofa'.  It sounds very interesting.  Yes, indeed,  it is.  Let me tell you the story behind this pain.

Almost every day,  when I return home from work.  I take short rest on the 'lover's sofa'.    It is soft and very comfortable.   Shortly I get into deep sleep.  It is about forty five minutes to one hour.  I love this short snap and it energizes me.   Unknowingly, it also brings me the low back pain.  The reason for this low back pain is again poor posture.   The sofa is too soft to support my back and the half sit half sleep posture results in continuous but subtle strain and sprain on the low back.   Over time, this condition would go from bad to worse.  I must correct the way I take my snap.     The proper place for sleeping is the bed.  And for sitting posture it is always sitting straight as we were told when we were vrey young.  Truth is always true.

Buddies, you have any ideas about the classifications of low back pain.  Probably you have some.  In view of my low back pain, I want to know more about this pain.  I do my research and now I put it here sharing this information with all buddiesl

I am the salad man at IBM 3600 Steele Avenue East, Ontario Canada.  My nickname is salad man David   People can Google me by typing in the Google search box my nickname.  Yes, that is true.  You can try this and come back to continue reading this article later on.  Today I am going to tell you buddies my own salad story and stories  I heard at my salad station.

Let me start my salad story.  Before I took up the job in the salad station,  I did not eat any salad.  I ate very little vegetables and I ate them only when my wife requested me to do so.  She always says, "People needs vegetables and you have to eat some".  I did not like the taste; they are not as tasty as beef, pork and chicken, not to mention fish and shrimp.  You know this is very common especially among men and children.

My health is ok.  I don't have any serious illness.  I can walk and do exercise.  There is nothing wrong with my body.  I have my annual medical check up.  The family doctor told me my ECG was fine, physical check-up was good, blood test was normal.   So for past 18 years, everything was fine until two years ago my family told me to watch out my diet telling me my cholesterol was on the borderline.  I should avoid those fast food, deep fried food, etc.  Otherwise, my cholesterol would go higher and medication would be necessary.  For two years in a roll, my blood test showed that my cholesterol was in the grey area.    My family doctor in his firm tone reminded me to change my eating habit.

It was around that time I was assigned to the new job as the salad man.  To know my salads and to promote them with confidence,  there is no better way than to eat the salads daily myself.  In this way, I started eating salad.    During the weekdays from Monday to Thursday, my lunch is nothing but salad.  Now, I have my salad even at home.

Several days after eating salad daily my body felt much better than before, the feeling of more energized,   body is light, feet movements are crispy and fast, the whole body feels good.     These are good signs and they are encouraging.    I continued my salad eating habit for over half year when I did my most recent medical check up and my blood test.  The results were perfect.   The blood test revealed my cholesterols are perfect. My family doctor was surprised and asked me what I had done to my body.   I told him I have not done anything special except I have a new eating habit that is salad eating for every lunch.      He told me the salads I ate are good for my body.  As  I treat my body well,  my body is nice to me now.

Some people came to my salad station and I asked them why they like my salad.  Most people said they want to eat healthy.  It is the New Year resolution.  Some said they want to reduce weight.  Some said they are vegetarians and they have been eating like that since birth.  Today, people are more knowledgeable about eating healthy.  More and more people begin eating vegetables and fruits.

Before I let you go, here is my veggie salad recipe:

Main Ingredient are Romaine Lettuce and Iceberg Lettuce
(wash lettuce clean, repeat washing for couple of times to ensure they are clean.  Then cut them into small bite sizes for easy eating)

vegetarian salad 2.jpgNow, you can add the following choices of:
  • sliced tomatoes
  • sliced cucumbers
  • sliced red peppers
  • sliced green peppers

Now, for the salad dressings:

  • Red wine vinegar
  • olive oil

Mix all ingredients in a big bowl with the dressing.  It is now ready to serve.  By the way,  try to skip the regular dressings they contain too much calories.

P.S.

People don't actually realize a lot of antioxidant foods are from vegetables.  e.g. broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, and peppers are all excellent choices with great benefits for your body.  For vegetables go for those that are rich in color. They have lot of phytonutrients. They are nutrients found in the skins of several fruits and vegetables.  They give the food colors as well as flavors and scent.

The advantage of raw salads over cooked vegetables is the content of nutrients.  There are more nutrients and vitamins in the raw salads whereas in the cooked vegetables the cooking process destroys some of the nutrients especially the enzymes which are essential for people's vitality.  That is the reason why after taking fresh salad say for one week you feel good in your body.  You feel you are energized and your body movements are light and swift.

Thumbnail image for orange juice.jpg

I have to take my breakfast daily, from Monday to Friday.  For Saturday and Sunday, I go for Chinese tea and dim sum. Yes it is only during the working days of the week.  My favourite breakfast  includes:

  • Thumbnail image for breakfast with bagel.jpg
  • a cup of orange juice
  • a sesame bagel  (toasted)
  • three slices of tomatoes
  • a piece of leaf lettuce
  • a piece of cheddar cheese
  • a scramble egg, well done

I took my cup of coffee early at 7:10 a.m. to kick off the day's work
then later at 10:30 a.m. I take my breakfast.  It is essential for the day's activities.  If I don't take the breakfast or not enough food for my breakfast, I feel weak and movements of the hands and feet would become slow.  The whole body movement simply slow down because energy level inside the body is too low.   In short, the breakfast energizes my body.

Buddies, many of you have heard that  'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'.   It is possible some of my readers would like to know why.   Let me give you the details here.

During the night our body uses the fuel (glucose) that is stored in our liver, blood and muscles to keep the heart beating. the lungs breathing, the nerves transmitting and the cell dividing.  Since the time span between dinner and breakfast is the longest between any of the three meals of the day, our body is in a fasting mode.  That is why breakfast literally "break the fast".  Ideally  we should eat within two hours of getting up in the morning.

As regard children I meant those who begin their day without breakfast have shown a decline in attention in the late morning hours, a negative attitude toward school work and a decrease in scholastic achievement.

 According to many studies nutritious breakfast with fruits and vegetables would lower the risk of heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.

Finally  buddies,   I take this opportunity to remind you to take your breakfast .    The same reminder for your children and grand children. Don't to skip breakfast.    Have a good day.

Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year.  It is early morning 5:51 a.m. I pray to God, the Lord of the Universe.   I pray for people's  peace, love and kindness.  I pray there will be peace restored in places where people earnestly need peace.  I pray there will love among people who are thirsty  for love,  to love and  being loved.  I wish there will be kindness among us in abandunce. In the name of Jesus the Christ, God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.

 Kindness is like a snowball that's rolling down a hill. Each unselfish act or word is another snowflake that greets the others...creating something much larger than itself in the process.

Today is the Chinese New Year Eve.  Tomorrow will be the first day of the New Year.  It is the year of the rabbit according to the lunar calender.  Though we moved out of Hong Kong twenty years, we still keep some of Chinese traditions during the Chinese New Year.   Enjoy delicious food is one of the most welcome culture nowadays.  To celebrate the Chinese New Year Eve we have chicken, fish, dry oyster, roasted pork, and Chinese cabbage.  They are the most traditional foods for Chinese New Year Eve dinner.

According to the our tradition, every family will gather together celebrating this evening to kick off the celebration for first new year day.   Some people living in North America, Europe, South America, etc., may go back to their respective home countries to celebrate the Chinese New Year with their parents and relatives.  Likewise, young people of China working outside of their home town would return back to their home from places all over China by trains, ships and aeroplanes.   Chinese New Year is the time of reunion when family members unite and spend the great time together with one another.  December and January are the most busy months for the national transportation systems in China.

Chinese keep this tradition from generation to generation.  This culture is carried forward like this for thousands of years.  In the New Year time starting from the first day, everything is brand new, the outfits as well as the underwears, the socks and the shoes, even a new haircut.   In the old days, I meant those days when boomers were young boys and girls,  all children were crazy about New Year time.  It was the only moment when there are so many goodies all at one time.  They dreamt about  New Year time and the good foods during sleep. Those days in the 50s, 60s, and 70s people were so poor that they had  just enough food for the belly and clothes for the body.  They lived a life that just covered the basic needs.  Children and adults might eat chicken and meat only once or twice in the whole year.  Kids and young people doing well in their study or at work would be rewarded by their seniors with the chicken drum sticks which are regarded as the best meat of the chicken in our community.     Such good and delicious foods as well as the red packets were the center of attraction.   Even now, at this age, we are still excited when thinking about these memories.  Below is the video clip about 'poon choi' a tradtional eating festive celebration during the Chinese New Year time.   People eat with a big bowl piled full and top up with all delicious food.  Enjoy and feel the festive atmosphere.

Besides the delicious foods, red packets of cash, there are other attractions such as lion dance, dragon dance, fire crackers and fireworks display.  Here below is the video which I hope you enjoy. The best ever lion dance shown in videos.   It would refresh your old memories about New Year time.

Meanwhile, A Prosperous New Year and Kung Hei Fat Choy!
             新年快樂恭喜發財

I shall become sixty five pretty soon.  Actually I am doing the countdown.  There are only 20 days to go when I shall reach my official retirement date.   Yes, you guess right.  It is February 21st, 2011.

Many people asked me what are you going to do when you retire?  One of my co-workers said to me telling me not to retire.  She said it would be very boring.  My manager told me he liked the way I worked telling me I may stay on my work until I am seventy.   I am so pleased for their concern and I have decision made already couple of years back.  I would stick to my retirement  plan.  By the way, here are some retirement activities I have in mind at the moment of writing this post:

Recently, I came across an article about the health of senior people.  Two groups of people were compared.   It was found people who continued working after their 55 are comparatively healthier than those already retired and stayed home.   The important point brought out from the study was people must remain active and this is important for retiring people to bear in mind.

I would work out my simple plan of action based on the following simple goals:

  • eating healthy, more vegetables, fruits of all colours
  • sleep early and well at night, plus a snap in the afternoon
  • exercise for the muscle and mind
  • meeting people personally daily
  • be happy and positive
  • treat others nice
  • enrich people through life

Buddies, keep tuned in for the updates
