In this economic downturn, there is reason for boomers and seniors searching for jobs to feel optimistic. Contrary to widespread opinion and supported by research by such lofty agencies such as the Department of Labor, the American Council of Life Insurance and Andrus Gerontology Center, workers over 50 are:

1. More conscientious and harder working than younger workers
2. Likely to take less sick leave
3. More capable of evaluating decisions but are cautious and may take a while longer to come to a decision
4. Generally more perceptive, emotionally stable and motivated
5. Just as capable of learning
6. Technology challenged--true, but some focused education will help tremendously

In addition, most mature workers are no longer interested in "climbing the ladder." And many will sacrifice earnings for either a nice working environment or the gratification that goes with "making this a better world".

Here are some tips for boomers, seniors and retirees who want to increase their success at landing a job:

1. Earn money while exercising (dog-walking, gardening or walking guided tours) or watching television (house-sitting)

2. If you're hankering for more grandchild time but can't be with them, try a position in childcare.

3. Consider working from your home by checking out employment with answering services, home call centers handling airline and hotel reservations and roadside assistance, technical support, or medical billing.

4. Retailers hire people to ensure that displays and promotions are in order, the staff fully understands its products and services, and customer service is exemplary.

5. Check common online job listings in the classified section of your local newspaper and on ">http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities"> Craigslist and the http://www.rileyguide.com/ "> Riley Guide, an online job search.

6. Let your friends, acquaintances, family, classmates, and former employers and co-workers know that you're looking for work. You'll be surprised at how much they'll want to help you.

7. Expand your network by joining Twitter and Facebook.

8. Create a blog using free blogging services such as Wordpress, about your area of expertise. Blog">http://50somethinginfo.blogspot.com/">Blog about your expertise!

9. Use LinkedIn to find a job.

10. Now...get back to work!
